Kalkan

Kalkan is a wonderfully picturesque harbour town and although relatively lively, has a hint of relaxed sophistication and an irresistible cosmopolitan buzz. Kalkan, smaller than other resorts, is renowned for its bougainvillea covered walls, quaint cobbled streets and high quality rooftop terraced restaurants with the undeniably stunning views of the bay. The climate here is what dreams are made of, with relentless sunshine, soaring temperatures in peak season, green mountains and a postcard perfect turquoise coastline.

The old quarter of Kalkan town retains its charm and ambience with ancient architecture and a maze of small winding cobbled streets and white washed walls. Nestled between the bars and eateries you can browse your way along rows of colourful shops and high quality boutiques selling unique gifts and traditional Turkish treasures.

Kalkan is a foodie’s paradise and has an abundance of restaurants. Among the many roof-top restaurants and bars nestled along the Lycian coast, Kalkan perhaps offers the most stylish ambience. The reputable food is a fusion of regional Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine at its best. We recommend trying the local drink ‘Rakı’ with some delicious meze. Choose between meandering down and dining in one of the fine waterfront restaurants that line the idyllic harbour, or make the most of the stunning views by feasting on one of the many romantic rooftop terraces on offer.

Once a small fishing village, Kalkan harbour itself is a charming marina with a pebble beach to one end and waterfront restaurants and bars that come alive in the evenings the other. Kick back and enjoy a fine meal or drink by the sea, with the soft strums of live music. Around sunset, if you haven’t already joined them for a day out on the azure seas, you can enjoy a cocktail as you watch the boats and gulets return from their day’s voyage, jostling for mooring space at the docks.

The magnificent Taurus mountains provide a sensational backdrop to the bay, as well as a home to some small charming villages that are worth visiting to experience authentic mountain village life, the cooler mountain climes, unbeatable panoramic views and a trip to one of the wonderful local trout farms to sample the delicious trout fish is a must.

There are numerous beach clubs perfectly poised along the coast of the bay above the crystal clear turquoise waters and water sports abound. Nearby are two blue flag beaches; Patara, an UNESCO world heritage site with incredible ruins and a 12km open stretch of white sand and picture perfect sand dunes, or Kaputaş; this stunning 500 metre sandy cove is one of the most photographed beaches in the world and features on the front of most holiday catalogues.

Forming an important part of the Lycian region, Kalkan has more to offer than just fantastic views. The area is steeped in rich history and culture with incredible ancient sites just waiting to be explored. Tlos, Letoon, Patara, Kekova and Xanthos to name but a few are all nearby. Discover Patara’s well preserved amphitheatre or delve deep into the tombs carved into Tlos mountainside. For more action, why not kayak your way down the Xanthos river or trek through Saklikent gorge, the second largest gorge in Europe. To get a taste of the culture, checking out the regions local market is a good way to start where you can indulge yourself in sampling local produce such as juicy olives, honey to die for and crumbly cheeses. No holiday to Kalkan would be complete without a Turkish bath or “Hammam” experience – the perfect way to unwind and start your holiday feeling pampered like never before.

A much loved hidden gem, Kalkan has something for everyone and we look forward to welcoming you and sharing our secrets.
